Greens say no to welfare sanctions in Epping Forest.

26 March 2017

Cllrs Heap and NevilleEpping Forest Green Party fully support Unite Community's day of action against welfare sanctions, being held on Thursday 30th March. Union members and campaigners will be outside Loughton JobCentre from 12.00 to 14.00 leafleting and raising awareness of the damage welfare sanctions do to jobseekers and their families.

Steven Neville, Green Party District Councillor for Buckhurst Hill East said,

'Government policy is penalising the poor, the vulnerable and the needy. There is no evidence that sanctions help or encourage people into work. In fact the only small study conducted so far, commissioned by the DWP, found the opposite. These types of sanctions are totally ineffective and need to be reversed.'

Cllr Simon Heap, Green Party County Council candidate for Buckhurst Hill and Loughton South, added,

These sanctions pile more pressure onto people who are already under great pressure. They have an impact on mental and physical health, increase social isolation and reduce peoples' ability to find and accept work. They are utterly counterproductive.'

‘We support Unite Community's National Day of Action Against Sanctions and will continue to campaign against the DWP's unfair and harmful sanctions policy.'
